In a bottle

When I was fourteen years old my family was taking a trip to Denmark. What better opportunity to send a message in a bottle?

I had read some story about a boy who threw a bottle with a message in the ocean and half a life later, it was picked up by a person halfway across the planet.

I was obviously very impressed by this and since I always had a thing for the sea, big ships and pirates I figured the least I could do was to send my own message.

So I wrote my message, in English on one side and Swedish on the other, asking whoever found the message to put it in an (included and addressed) envelope together with some information about where it was found and when.

I rolled up the message, put it and the envelope in a transparent plastic bag which I sealed, then put the whole lot in an old Rum bottle. The bottle I sealed with some kind of silicone or glue (I don't really remember exactly).

Halfway between Denmark and Sweden, I threw the bottle into the sea from the rear of the ferry.

Nothing left to do but wait and maybe forget about it. I waited, then I forgot about it.

Then, when I was twice the age, I was contacted by a reporter from a newspaper in Varberg, Sweden. As it turned out, the bottle had been found by an old fisherman.

Most likely, the bottle had flown pretty much straight back to Sweden and landed in the dirt, where it waited for a little more than a decade to be found.

Even though the bottle didn't get very far, I was still quite impressed that it was found and that made it's way back to me.
